STUDIES IN I THESSALONIANS- PART 13 Listen to Audio
                             January 18, 2009
Intro: Ch.4:13-18- several subjects in this passage
I. Here, physical death is described in terms of the
body asleep.
1.Listen to the language:  vs.13, 14, 15, 16
The NT view is the physical body is in repose or
rest, awaiting resurrection.
  See I Corinthians 15:6, 12, 18, 20, 51
Our bodies are called temples in I Cor.6:19
2. Note the reference to our bodies being asleep, but
not our souls-  see II Corinthians 5:1-8

II. While believers in Christ still experience physical
death, yet they may face death comforted by the
greater reality of His inseparable love.
1. Death is the appointment of all mankind- I Cor.15:22
and Heb.2:15, 9:27
2.Some even find death to be positive and joyful-
Rom.8:38-39, Psa.23:4,  17:15
3. So, death may be viewed as a transition from
time to eternity, from sorrow to joy, suffering to relief.

III. There is a fate worse than physical death;
The second death  is to be feared.  Rev.20:6, 11-15.
1. As phy.death is the separation of life of the soul
from the body, so the 2nd death is the separation
of the soul from God for eternity
We are condemned by our positi on/condition under Adam.
2. Deliverance from 2nd death is thru faith in
Jesus Christ-John 3:16-18, 36

IV. Those who sleep in Christ will experience
bodily resurrection at His return.
4:14- bring with Him     4:16 dead in Christ rise first
Reflects the magnificence of Jesus’ resurrection-
Philippians 3:21,  Titus 2:13 and I John 3:2
