Intro: Col.2:20-22- Lent = Christian calendar, followed by
Catholic & some Protestants.
I. THE PURPOSE OF LENT: 40 day period of penitence,
prayer, alms-giving & self-denial in preparation for Easter
Lent= length called a season of ‘penace’
II. A PERSPECTIVE ON LENT: difference between
Catholic view and Biblical view on two subjects:
1) the Suffering of Christ - Cath. view is that historical
Calvary, Lord’s Supper and Mass are same – both a
sacrifice and a sacrament. (Real Presence of Christ).
N.T. view – Christ died once (not in perpetuation)-
Rom.5:6, Heb.7:27, 9:26, 28, 10:10, 12, 14, I Pet.3:18
Lord’s Supper is a remembrance- I Cor.11:24-25
Christ did a finished work that satisfied the Father.
2) Forgiveness of sin & eternal life—Cath. view is that
of accumulated merit of Christ, saints, etc.
Cath. live in perpetual probation-
N.T. view- Forgiveness/et. Life are available and will
be realized when we trust Christ- Col.2:13, John 3:16,18,
4:10, 5:24, 6:35, 47, 57, 20:30-31 and I John 5:13
Question is-“Can you believe God’s promise?”
III. PROPOSALS TO CONSIDER ON LENT:
1. While respecting the sincerity of those practicing Lent,
the over-all concept fails to appreciate & act on Bib. Truth.
2. Penitence (repentance), prayer, alms-giving, and
self-denial should not be seasonal, but essentially part of
a believer’s daily life- Lk.9:23
3. A Christian who looks to scripture as guide will see
the primary response to suffering/death of Christ is
thanksgiving =appreciation joy=reality of promise
4. We pray our Lent-practicing friends might come to
see the all-sufficient work of Christ alone at Calvary and
the liberating grace that is the possession of each
believer - Ephesians 2:4-9
