Intro: Genesis 25:19-26- remarkable man—

Why study Jacob’s life?

1. He’s of the family of ________- Gen.12:1-3,  Rom.4:3

2. He illustrates ________  __________- Rom.9:10-13

3. His life is that of ____________-  Gal.5:17

4. His experiences may teach us- Rom.15:4

 

The settings and events of Genesis 25

1.  Isaac waits 20 yrs for offspring with Rebekah-

 

2. Significant struggles of twins during pregnancy

  caught Rebekah’s attention

 

3. The Lord gives a disturbing prophecy to Rebekah.

“primogeniture” =exclusive rights of the firstborn

 

4. The actual birth evidenced a future struggle.

 

Jacob will illustrate that grace….

1. is a divine means of reversal of fortune.  “older [Esau]

  will serve the younger [Jacob]

  *Jacob does NOT deserve grace, but neither do we!

2. demonstrates the failure and meaninglessness of the

  naturalistic and deterministic world-view.

  *Quotes

  Grace will bring us back from the brink of hopelessness.

3. gives motive & means to transform one’s moral view.
