                   Joseph of Arimathea

                          5/29/05

 

Intro: Matt.27:45-60- many different characters are

seen in the gospels, all of which contribute to the

attractiveness of the Lord Jesus.

 

I. As a wealthy man, Joseph was an exception

to the rule. 27:57 “become a disciple of Jesus”

  1) Alert to spiritual events, he waited for kingdom of

God- Mk.15:43      see Mt.19:24

  2) Not to say that the rich cannot be converted

 

II. As to reputation & character, Joseph was

untarnished.  Lk.23:50

  1) Anyone with a real sense of justice should be

attracted to Jesus

  2) This is part of theory of child rearing-

Prov.22:6

 

III. As a member of Sanhedrin, Joseph was

absent from the trial of Jesus.  Lk.23:51

Why?   1) not contacted—doubtful

 2) Perhaps he spoke for the Lord—no evidence

 3) Perhaps the Lord intervened- Mk.15:1

   What a difficult night Joseph must have had!

Yet, it fulfilled Zech.13:7.

 

IV. As a disciple, he was flawed but repentant.

John 19:38..but secretly, for fear of the Jews..”

   1) Fear impacts both rich and poor.

   2) Joined by Nicodemus (vs.39)- they fulfilled

Isa. 53:9
