THE LAMB OF GOD -part 1 Listen to Audio
March 29, 2009
Intro: John 1:29, I Peter 1:18-21- one of most vivid pix
of Christ in scripture.
I. Observe the parallel traits of this animal to the
Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Why a “lamb”?
1. It is a domesticated animal, not a predator
Sheep are harmless- Heb.7:26, Acts 10:38
2. It had acceptability to the Lord- (as sacrifice)
Gen.4:3-4, Heb.11:4
Death of Christ is acceptable to God for all persons-
I John 2:2
3. Sheep are valuable creatures—very productive
Lk.3:22, 9:35
II. Observe the lamb was selected for OT ritual
sacrifices that served as repeated object lessons
to Israel in OT. Israel was given detailed system of
worship in Ex., Lev. And Deut.
1. It had to be male, without blemish- Lev.2:1-4
It prefigured Christ- Rom.5:12, 15-17
Without blemish = Lev.22:19-24, I Pet.2:22
2. The animal was a symbolic “sin-bearer”- Lev.1:3
Animal sacrifice did not bring actual “forgiveness”,
but anticipated the sacrifice/suffering of Christ.
Hebrews 10:4
III. Observe major differences between such OT
worship and the NT truth about Christ.
Christ as our sin-offering constituted a payment to God
for His Person being offended by our sin and to provide
righteousness for us.
1. OT payment=temporal Christ’s pyt =eternal
2. “ “=ceremonial Christ’s=actual
3. “ “ =human Christ’ –human/divine
4. “ “ =lacking right. Christ’s=righteous
5. “ “ = ended Christ’s- endlessly efficacious
