      MOTHER’S DAY MESSAGE

                May 13, 2007

Intro: Matt. 20:20-24- human behavior is interesting!

Salome = Mt.27:56, Mk.15:40, 16:1, & Jn.18:25

I. CLEARLY, SALOME HAD SERIOUS AMBITIONS

FOR HER SONS.   grant” =speak with authority

1) Listen to Eve- Gen.4:1

2) Even Mary, mother of Jesus was cautioned- Lk.2:28-35

3) Salome approaches Jesus about a position of great

power for each of her sons

II. SALOME FAILED TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN

POWER AND EXCELLENCE.

1) Excellence = quality of person in  heart & mind

Prov.16:32,  22:29, Ecc.7:2

2) Some think “excellence” is power over others.

3) Salome would have been wiser to have sought

Christ to change her sons

III. SALOME FAILED TO SEE WHAT SHE PROVOKED

IN THE OTHER DISCIPLES.

1) If Salome is sister to Mary, Jesus’ mother, then she attempts

to use her family relationship to gain power

note Matt.19:27-30- Jesus had already answered!

2) Unbridled ambition will provoke jealous, envy and resent-

ment!  Some sins aggravate more readily than others!

IV. OBVIOUSLY, IN SOME WAYS, MOTHER AND SONS

WERE ALIKE.  In Mark 10:35-37, it is James & John who ask.

1) Note 2 other incidents with these sons: Mk.9:38- censuring

attitude  and  Lk.9:52-55- condemning attitude

2) As you share physical traits of a parent, what sinful thinking

do you also share?
