Intro: ch.11:1-8 and 18:1-7- twin
parables with similar
instruction or
motivation.
I.
Comparing the two parables: call them the “friend
parable” and the “widow
parable”
1. The “friend parable” is
relational, while the
“widow
parable” is more positional
2. Of the “friend parable” there
was an important request
while the “widow parable”, there was a
critical demand.
- Use of “unjust” to
contrast with God’s benevolence.
3. Both the friend and judge comply
due to persistence.
II.
Choosing a few words:
1. In 11:8- persistence-
the Gk. word means shamelessness
>it is a positive expression of
persistence.
2. In 18:1-lose heart-
Gk.word means to not give in to
evil.
>it is a negative expression of
persistence.
3.In 18:5- “weary”- literally, “to
wear out or wear thru”
Matt.7:7-8,
Heb.11:6
III.
Cataloguing some lessons:
1. Clearly, some answers to prayer
are delayed
2. Such a delay in answering prayer
provides time for
character-development in the one who
prays.
3. Delayed answer to prayer is a
great joy when finally
fulfilled.
4. We will persist in prayer in
matters deepest and
closest to our
hearts.
