STUDIES IN I
PETER- PART 15
Feb. 5,2006
Intro:3:1-7- having discussion submission in civil
(2:13)
and vocational
(2:18) authorities, Peter moves to
the
domestic one.
I.
WIVES ARE CALLED TO SUBMISSION, EVEN TO
UNSAVED
HUSBANDS.
3:1
1) Paul gives us a larger pix of the divine order in I
Cor.11:3.
Submission is NOT based on some
theory of less intelligence
or inferiority in females, but on
God’s order.
2) Peter actually proposed a
“counter-culture” viewpoint-
3:3-4- he moves attention away from
external appearance to
internal
assets.
“hidden man of
the heart” =femininity has an alluring &
attractive mystery—yet here, it is likely
character!
3)Such inward beauty is highly valued by
the Lord.
Her self-esteemed flows from the
bounty of God’s personal
approval of
her.
4) Such godliness is found in
examples of other women.
3:5-6 In Rom.4, Paul used Abraham to
illustrate doctrine
of imputation; here, Peter uses
Sarah to illustrate submission.
II.
HUSBANDS ARE CALLED TO RENDER HONOR TO
THE
WIFE.
1:7
1)”dwelling with knowledge” –
husbands must be LEARNERS!
2) “giving
honor to the weaker vessel”- he must see ‘weakness’
as opportunity to protect,
not for mere power.
3) “heirs together..” Harmony will
be achieved when both
have due respect for the divine
appoint. & function of
marriage.
