      STUDIES IN I PETER- PART 18

Intro: Ch.3:18- first portion of a confessional statement

about Christ’s work running to vs.22.

SUBSTITUTIONARY SUFFERING & DEATH OF CHRIST

 

I. Christ died once with respect to human sin.

See 2:24 “bore our sins in his body..”

1) His coming to earth had several goals, including to

correct the human sin problem- 1:20

  Counsel of God determined this- Acts 2:22, 3:2

Eph. 1:4, 9, 11

2) The motive was love- John 17:18,23,24  I Jn.4:9-10

 

II. His suffering and death was the subject of

prophecy.   See 1:11

1)From earliest broad statements to detailed declarations:

Gen.3:15

Gen.22:2,5,8-13 pix of substitution

Exodus 12- “lamb died for the firstborn”

 

2) Details are given- Psa. 22:1-18

Isaiah 53: 2-12- clear language of substitution/sacrifice

 

III. Christ died in our place in order to bring us to

God.  bring us”= access

1) The Levitical system of animal sacrifice was an object

lesson in substitution.

 

2)”Just [singlular] for the unjust [plural]”

 

3) Not a replacement of one moral equal for another-

Romans 5:6-9

 

4) In less than 70 English words, Paul marvelously

reveals this substitution and its results- Rom.3:24-26
