   Studies in I Timothy-  PART 20

                       March 11, 2007

 

Intro: Ch. 4:6-10- Personal instruction to Timothy with

respect to his ministry.

 

I. Timothy’s practice- 4:6-

1) “if you instruct the brethren..”- instruct=to put or place

under

2) “you will be a good minister”-

3) “nourished in…”  A good minister practices continually

submitting to word of God while ministering to others

and simultaneously being nourished by that word.

4) “…carefully followed..” – Lk.1:3 & II Tim.3:10 – it

indicates competence

 

II. General principles- 4:7-8 – list of imperative verbs

1) “reject…” refuse to give time/effort to worthless causes

2) “exercise yourself to godliness”-  godliness=8 times

   > must accept personal responsibility for growth

      > understand spiritual vitality requires God’s word

         > realize effort is necessary

3) “godliness is profitable in all things”-

 

III. Valued prospect-4:8

Our prospect for future is predicated on the past!

See Romans 8:18-30 and 8:32- note both present and

future aspects.

 

IV. Our persuasion- 4:9-10  faithful saying…”

labor- inward challenge 

suffer reproach” =outward challenge

  “trust” – verb form of ‘hope’
