STUDIES IN I TIMOTHY- PART 5

                 November 5, 2006

Intro: Ch.1:18-20- leaving his biographical section,

Paul moves to serious instruction of Timothy,

I. “Prophecies made concerning  you” expresses the

spiritual insight previously declared of Timothy. 1:18

1)  Review- Acts 16:2, 3 and I Tim.4:14

2)  More general statements of how to achieve- Ps.1:1-3

Prov.1:5-6,8 = value of character

II. Shouldering responsibility, there is a calling to

the “noble campaign” [Lenski].

1:18- “charge”= 1:1, 5

1) Timothy was to accept this charge or authoritative

command from an apostle.

2) -Postmodernism vs. Biblical view

3) As bel., we must present a belief-system that explains

reality and points to Triune God who gives meaning to life.

III.  We are cautioned that our strategy involves

possessing two specific items. 1:19

1) “having” = to hold/possess/regard   “faith” = body of truth

see 4:15, 16  6:12, 21

This is the “objective” truth about God and His work.  It is

the written revelation given by Him to mankind.

2) “good conscience”- a viably functioning conscience that

approves/supports one’s scriptural conduct as right.

note 4:2-  This is the “subjective” side of good warfare.

IV. Failure to protect these 2 standards may bring

spiritual disaster. 1:19-20 “some having rejected…”

1) Loosed from truth, they drift to destruction- Eph.4:14

2) Divine chastisement is expressed thru apostolic directive.

delivered to Satan” = temporal punishment
