STUDIES IN
I TIMOTHY –PART 8
November 26,
2006
Intro: Ch.2:9-15- instructions on
women in local church; such
instructions reflect culture of 1st
century, but are not
restricted to
culture.
I.
Prescription- 2:9-10 “in like manner” – parallel to
call
for godliness in
men-
1) External appearance- “adorn themselves…”
“propriety
& moderation” =good taste & sanity
Excessive display was practice of
prostitutes.
2) Internal attitude- “proper” and
“professing godliness”
Consistent with I Peter 3:1-4
II.
Prohibition- 2:11-12- compare I
Cor.14:34-37
1) In local church, Christian women
are not to teach doctrine
to men or exercise authority over
men [see 3:15]
“silence”
– prevents women from invading office of pastor,
elder or deacon- *this is common
violation today!
Women are appointed to teach other women
as well
As children- Titus 2:1-5, II
Tim.1:5 >3:14
III.
Principle-2:13-14 –Paul takes us beyond culture
of
1st Century to Genesis’
creation & fall.
2 Elements effect women’s
position:
First, Eve was secondary creation
& subject to man- see
I Cor.11:3,
8-9
Second, Eve was first deceived, not
Adam- see 2:14
*Context in I Timothy is
doctrinal deception.
IV.
Promise-
3:15-
1) “saved”
=delivered from error & false teaching-4:16
“she”=Christian women as a class
2) “childbearing”- an idiomatic & cultural expression
for
normal domestic duties of a wife- see
5:14-15
Focus > character (faith,love,holiness &
self-control)
