STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF
JOHN- PART 53
March 14,
2007
Chapter
10, verse 15 “and I lay down my life for the sheep”- the willingness of Jesus to die
for us is an essential theme of the entire volume
of scripture- Heb.10:5-8. The “saving” work of Christ is always
presented
with aspects of substitution or
that His suffering was vicarious. Note in
vs.15,
“..for the sheep”- the word is huper= the word carries the
thought of not only ‘on our behalf’, but also ‘in our
stead’.
I. Christ’s death in relation to
sin
1) Vs. showing Christ died for
sinners- Matt.20:28; Romans 5:6-8; II Cor.5:14;
Eph.5:2, 25; I Tim.2:5-6; Heb.2:9; I
Peter 3:18 and I John 3:16
2) Vs.showing Christ suffered for sin- I Cor. 15:3; Gal.1:4; Heb.10:12; Isaiah
53:5,
8
3) Vs.showing Christ as bearing our sins- Heb.9:28; I Peter
2:24; Isa.53:6, 11,12
4) Vs. showing Christ “being made
sin” and “a curse for us”-II Cor5:21, Gal.3:13
II. Old Testament types of Christ’s
death-
1) Coats of skin for Adam &
Eve- Gen.3:21- supplied by innocent sufferer,
provided
by God with no respect to merit (grace)
2) Abel’s offering- Gen. 4:4- death
of the innocent on behalf of Abel, ‘firstlings’ of
flock,
accepted by God (without works or human effort)
3) Noah’s Ark- Gen.6:14-8:19-
withstood fury of divine judgment while providing
deliverance, proclaimed to the wicked world before wrath of
God
4) Offering of Isaac- Gen.22-
appointed by divine direction, effectually “done”
by Abraham,
revealed love of “Father”, carried out by obedient
“son”
5) Smitten Rock- Ex.17:5-7- Struck
by Moses (pix of divine wrath) instead of
striking
people, provided for all the water of “life” (eternal) w/o
merit
6) The Tabernacle- Ex.25-40-
provided means of appeasing divine wrath thru
an
innocent Sufferer (many types in Levitical
system)
III. Biblical words related to
Christ’s substitutionary suffering and
death-
(some
notes from F. Chafer’s SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY- Vol. 3)
1) Atonement-
found in numerous OT references- Ex.29:36, Lev.1:4-
transl. of Hebrew- kaphar=to cover- “suffering of..the bullock…has
the
effect to cover over the guilt of the
real criminal and make it invisible to
the eye of God” (Shedd). The
English “atonement” or ‘at-one-ment’
speaks
of the reconciliatory effect of the
shed blood between sinner and a Holy God.
Chafer suggests ‘atonement’ to
poorly represent the Hebrew, kaphar.
2)Forgiveness
or remission of sin- the thought here is that of
dismissing
or discharging of guilt based
on either the overt mercy of God or indirectly due
to
His holiness being satisfied with
the substitutionary suffering of
Christ.
Page 2
All forgiveness (OT or current)
looks the work of Christ on the Cross.
Often
expressed in terms of separating the sin
from the sinner.
3) Justification-
a term to indicate the believer’s “righteous standing before God” that is
brought about through a series of imputations by God; the last being the
imputation of Christ’s righteousness to the believer. Justification is only in Christ
and is solely based on grace and is contrasted with condemnation that came about through
Adam.
4) Propitiation-
used to speak of the satisfaction of God due to the immeasurable suffering of Christ
on the Cross required by divine offence
at man’s sin. Such satisfaction is the basis of the
offer of abounding grace to
sinners. Some connect propitiation with divine
anger provoked by man’s sin.
5) Reconciliation-
the word relates to “change”- since God is immutable and cannot change, it is understood in the sense of changing man’s
position before
God’s judgment through Christ’s
suffering for us.
6) Redemption-
a payment (ransom) to purchase; expressing the inestimable value of the work of
Christ in satisfying God’s holy character to “buy” sinners from the slave
market. “Blood of Christ” is proof
of His human physical and spiritual death on Calvary.
#4, 5, and 6 express what is meant by
the “finished work of Christ on Calvary”.
