STUDIES IN PHILIPPIANS- PART 18
2/27/05
Intro: Ch.3:4-10 “no confidence in
the flesh” prompts Paul
To give biographical experience in
this matter.
I.
Paul’s listing of pedigree and achievement would
have
given
him every advantage in a system of human merit.
note vs.4-6-
He then lists 7 items: Four regard “pedigree” and
three
regard “achievement”—by both
nature & nurture, Paul excelled.
II.
Yet, Paul rejects these advantages of human
merit
For
the single relationship with Jesus Christ.
Vs.7-8
1) Human merit is rejected as basis
of relationship with God
Luke 18:9-14 and Romans
3:21-26
2) Paul intensifies his argument in
vs.8 showing his goal is
“excellence of know. of
..Christ”
3) To the Philippians living in a
city stratified by identification
with pedigree/achievement, Paul’s
choice was a powerful
and positive example of
faith.
III.
Paul chooses a deeper relationship with Christ
which
fulfills verse 3. -- vs.
9-10
1) “be
found in him”- (purpose clause)- looks back to
justification and forward to sanctification
.
It emphasizes imputed R.of Christ resulting in union
with
Christ.
2) “that I
may know….”- Paul’s appetite for Christ deepened.
