THE GENEALOGY OF CHRIST- LK.3:23-38

Intro: Ancestry study can be interesting—how does the

genealogy of Jesus serve a meaningful purpose?

I. The genealogies serve to validate the humanity of

Christ-

1. Matt.1- focus on Joseph, husband of Mary

2. Lk.3- focus on Mary, Joseph is son-in-law of Heli

II. The genealogies remind us of the distinct

Jewishness of Jesus.

III. The genealogies provide a framework to

communicate the promises of God.

  In those lists, we encounter men & women who believed

God’s promises—

Abraham          Judah         David

IV. The genealogies serve to focus on the plan of God

working through the members on the list.

1. O.T. material is not random and unrelated-

2. Genealogies chart God’s plan to reveal His Person & walk.

V. The genealogies confirm God’s control of history

as He worked His plan out.  Imagine a divine photo album!

Preservation of

1. Israel         2.Judah        3. David       4. Preservation was

shown to Daniel in visions.

VI. Therefore, the genealogies serve to reflect God’s

integrity to fulfill His promises to OT Saints.

1. God has demonstrated His Veracity in fulfilling promises

2. God will demonstrate His Veracity in fulfilling promises now.
